Working in the field of condensed matter physics you will join a vibrant team of researchers who have been at the forefront of graphene research since its discovery at Manchester in 2004, and will work on a range of projects relating to graphene and other 2D materials funded by the European Commission, the European Research Council and other overseas funders.
The posts will focus on a number of projects, ranging from investigation of the fundamental properties of 2D materials, to the synthesis and characterization of graphene-based heterostructures by transport and photo-current measurements, to technological development of graphene-based devices.
You will hold or be about to obtain a PhD, or have equivalent experience in condensed matter physics or a related discipline. Preference will be given to applicants with significant experience in graphene and other two-dimensional crystals. You should also be well-organised and self-motivated with excellent oral and communication skills. A strong publication record in internationally peer-reviewed journals is essential. The posts are available from January 2014 for a period ranging from 24 to 36 months.

Ph.D: Creating nanodevices by pick-and-place assembly

The Advanced Nanoscale Engineering Group at Oxford University’s Materials Department is seeking extraordinarily motivated aspiring scientists to join as Doctoral Researchers (DPhil) starting in October 2014 (Michaelmas 2014).  Our group engages in early-stage, blue-skies research to create nanoscale devices and systems. This also involves trying to understand the underlying science.

The Project
Imagine a world where one can pick-and-place nanoparticles and other nanomaterials into real devices.  This kind of assembly at large scales revolutionized the previous century (cars for example), and creating something akin to this at the nanoscale could yet revolutionize the current one.  It would enable a host of new devices to be built using nanoparticles and structures that cannot be created with existing technology.  To realize these ambitions, we are looking for a team member to pursue the doctorate on fundamental aspects of nanoscience, including the study of surface forces at the nanoscale and the ability to attract single nanoparticles reliably, and place them in a manner similar to automobile assembly.
This project is in close collaboration with Asylum Research of Santa Barbara USA, IBM Research - Zurich, Switzerland and the Microelectronics iNets with potential opportunities to travel to partner sites.
Our Mentoring and Your Role
The successful candidate will enroll in the DPhil programme in the Department of Materials under the supervision of H Bhaskaran.
The DPhil student working on this project will have the opportunity to become an expert in advanced nanomanufacturing techniques, atomic force microscopy and nanoparticle assembly.  All our projects allow for significant creative contributions (and a reasonable ability to chose amongst various other projects within our group, see descriptions at http://nanoeng.materials.ox.ac.uk/Advanced_Nanoscale_Engineering_at_Oxford/Research.html).  The right DPhil candidate will have the freedom to shape research directions.  Our diverse group has a variety of informal mentoring approaches to get you up-to-speed and become a confident researcher within a reasonable time frame.
Your Profile and application
Your profile will ideally be one of a highly motivated researcher (evidenced by previous stints in research groups or labs), having (or predicted to earn) a first class honors degree (or equivalent) undergraduate/masters in Physics, Materials, Engineering, Chemistry or a closely related field with a deep desire to carry out independent experimental research.  You must enjoy hands-on laboratory experiments and have the desire to try out many novel ideas.  Evidence (via references) of initiative would be a plus, as this is an experimental project.

Funded by the European Science Foundation, this is a Marie Curie Initial Training Networks CoWet project. The Researcher is required to undertake research into the modelling of the foam drainage in the presence of surfactants and/or polymers, interaction of foams with a porous support and adsorption of desired amounts of a solute from the foam in a contact with a porous substrate to the pores.

Applicants should have (i) a strong interest in modeling and computer simulations of foam behaviour (using available theoretical models) and spreading using Navier-Stokes equations, (ii) the ability to develop and use analytical and numerical tools to analyze those models, (iii) the willingness to visit and collaborate with other groups of the Marie Curie network CoWet. Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher/PhD: Optics/Photonics

Two Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher/PhD positions for 36 months starting from 1st February 2014 are available within the Applied Optics Group, School of Physical Sciences. These are supported by an EU funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network European Industrial Doctorate, jointly organized with NKT Photonics Denmark. Students will spend half of their time in Kent and half at NKT in Denmark.
Research will focus on innovative solutions of generating and handling the supercontinuum (SC), connection between noise and usefulness of SC in applications such as optical coherence tomography and generation of tunable UV-light sources using the SC. Supervision will be provided in an European setting where specialised and complementary training will be provided at the two sites as well as during network events.
The funding stipulations insist that at the time of recruitment, applicants: should be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the UK or Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to appointment. The applicant must have a good background in theoretical and experimental optics and expected to have graduated in Physics (Optics) or Electrical and Electronic Engineering. We are looking for highly imaginative and self-motivated individuals with expertise in lasers, cameras, fibre optics, digital signal processing. Prior experience of LabView or C++ and skills in interfacing I/O boards are essential.
The applicant will be paid a salary in the region of €40,000 (paid in the local currency using an appropriate conversion rate), subject to Marie Curie regulations. A mobility allowance depending on personal situation is also paid.

Applications are invited for two Research Assistants/Research Associates in the Department of Engineering, to work in the field of nanotechnology. The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

In this project, we aim to develop new techniques to create highly organized assemblies of nanoparticles, including carbon nanotubes and graphene. Herein we emphasize the importance of controlling the arrangement of nanoparticles at different length scales in order to create superstructures with tuneable properties. The project will follow a methodical approach, bringing together different fields of expertise ranging from macro- and microscale manufacturing, to nanoscale material self-assembly and chemical surface modification. Key responsibilities include taking a prominent role in conducting the research, and interacting with team members; designing, executing and analysing experiments; reporting and publishing research results.
Applicants are required to have obtained (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in one of the following: material science, soft matter physics, chemistry, electrical or mechanical engineering;(or any other relevant subject). Applicants should also have: experience in laboratory work; the ability to conduct projects and analyse processes; the ability to work autonomously and effectively in a team. We are also looking for experience in relevant material characterization methods, lithography, microfluidics, self-assembly, electrodes for energy storage, water filtration. Chemical modification or synthesis of nanomaterials is an advantage but not required.

Food Nanostructure: Role of Molecular Arrangement on Phase Stability and Phase Transitions in Food Processing.  
The post is available immediately for a fixed period of 36 months and supports the Lipid Biophysics Research activities at the School of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds. You will assist Professor Michael Rappolt in designing and carrying out Small and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (SWAXS) experiments in the Lab as well as at synchrotron sites (Diamond, DESY, Elettra).
The aim will be to highlight the relationship between the nanostructure of food and its phase behaviour. This includes characterizing crystallization processes in food, investigation of colloid interfaces and the determination of particle structures on the nanoscale.

The Laboratory for Matter Dynamics is recruiting a Ph.D. student to work on Fujitsu-High Power Computing Wales (HPCW) funded research activities starting October 2013.  The research will apply density functional theory (DFT) to understand bonding dynamics at polymer-carbon nanotube interfaces. Simulations will link to experimental data collected at the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory and will make extensive use of HPCW facilities.
This project involves a strong collaborative with the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the State University of New York at Buffalo. This research program is being designed in agreement with the Materials Genome Initiative paradigm. Exceptional candidates are sought with a strong background in materials science, theoretical physics, quantum chemistry and/or their computational specialties. Experience in simulation work within the frame of atomic physics is certainly a plus.  English fluency is an absolute requirement. PhD: Bio-inspired Nanosensors

This scholarship will fund students for their tuition fees, a bursary to cover living expenses (£13,726 per year) and a Research Training Support Grant for research consumables and conference attendance. This role will be based at the Nano Group within the Electronics and Computer Science Department and will use state-of-the-art facilities at the Southampton Nanofabrication Centre. SNC is one of the premiere cleanrooms in Europe, facilitating a uniquely broad range of technologies by combining traditional and novel top down fabrication with state-of-the-art bottom up fabrication.

The outline of the project is presented below:
Over the past, chemical sensors have allowed us to affiliate biology with engineering, enabling the development of bio-inspired systems. In theory, physical dimensions and selectivity of a sensor determines the minimal biological activities that can be sensed. However, conventional sensors, typically suffer from a relatively low sensing resolution while their scaling works against the reliability of the device. Nature on the other hand, is known to be extremely efficient in performing signal transduction, with transmembrane ion-channels being exceptionally effective chemical sensors. To date, research efforts have been mainly focused in replicating the mechanical properties of ion-channels, while the possibility of employing electrically equivalent devices has been neglected.

The aim is to create novel nanoscale sensors inspired by biological ion-channels that can demonstrate an ultra-high detection sensitivity, accuracy and wide dynamic range. These attributes could significantly enhance the current state-of-the-art spatio-temporal sensing resolution, to enable emerging applications in life sciences and healthcare.

The ideal candidate should have an MEng/MSc (or equivalent, or near completion) with first class honours or distinction in Electronics, Materials Science, Physics, or a closely related subject with experience in micro/nano fabrication techniques and an interest in thin-films. Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is available to UK/EU applicants for a period of 3 years. The Nano Group will provide research experience in one of its programs, training, laboratory facilities and access to its seminar and lectures. Students would also be encouraged to attend three major conferences during their period of study and would have access to all university facilities for wider study, including the libraries, and recreation.

From February 2014 the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB) and Photon Sciences Institute (PSI) within the Faculties of Life Sciences and Engineering & Physical Sciences, respectively, will host a €3.5 million Marie Curie Initial Training Network - MAGIC “MAGnetic Innovation in Catalysis”. The training network has been funded as part of The European Commission’s forward strategy for the development of future emerging technologies, through which it has funded a set of initiatives to extend training and capabilities to result in and increase one of the central pillars of the EU research and innovation programme addressing key priorities within Horizon 2020: Excellent Science.
The network will be co-directed by Professor Nigel Scrutton and Richard Winpenny in collaboration with a total of twelve industry and academic partners: the Universities of Tokyo, Freiburg, Lund, Joseph Fourier, Edinburgh and Copenhagen, and with AstraZeneca, Bruker, TgK, Conformetrix and SARomics. Twelve Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) will be recruited to the Innovative Doctoral training network and will work on a variety of research projects for 3 yrs working towards a PhD registered at The University of Manchester working with experienced supervisors and interdisciplinary teams. The ESR researchers will use a variety of experimental technologies around magnetic resonance and will undertake relevant research secondments based with our industrial/academic partners.
The main scientific aims of the network program will be to:
  1. Train the future generation of leading investigators of biological catalysis/enzymology with a view to developing new enabling technologies that can advance physical understanding of catalysis and mechanism.
  2. Perform collaborative research projects that will explore the mechanistic details of enzyme systems by adopting innovative, versatile and unique experimental techniques to probe the contributions of motions across multiple spatial and temporal timescales and quantum chemical effects.
  3. Develop these novel methods to transform current experimental capabilities and apply them to a range of important biological catalyst to probe the mechanistic importance of coupled motions and quantum physico-chemical effects.
12 Early Stage Researchers are sought to perform research on one of 12 research projects with a view to developing new enabling technologies that can advance physical understanding of catalysis and mechanism. ESRs will be expected to work towards a PhD through registration at The University of Manchester.
