- A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the Laboratory of Multiscale Modeling at the Nanoscale at NC State in Raleigh, NC. The project involves performing molecular dynamics simulations of multicomponent polymer systems with the LAMMPS software program.Specific job duties include the following: Perform simulation research; participate in collaborations, including with industrial partners; mentor and teach other lab members; publish papers and articles; and deliver presentations. A Ph.D. in polymer science, chemistry, materials science, physics, chemical engineering, or related field is required. Some programming experience is preferred.
The laboratory is housed on the award-winning Centennial Campus of NC State, which contains more than 60 companies, government agencies, and non-profits, and over 75 university research and academic units, including the Colleges of Textiles and Engineering. Across the street from the laboratory is the impressive new and technologically advanced Hunt Library, and the campus also includes a variety of recreational amenities such as walking trails, a lake with a fishing pier, and an 18-hole golf course. PhD Studentship in Functional Oxides
From atomic-scale to nanodevices

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship to be filled by November 2013. This scholarship will fund students for their tuition fees, a bursary to cover living expenses (£13,726 per year) and a Research Training Support Grant for research consumables and conference attendance.
This role will be based at the Nano Group within the Electronics and Computer Science Department and will use state-of-the-art facilities at the Southampton Nanofabrication Centre. SNC is one of the premiere cleanrooms in Europe, facilitating a uniquely broad range of technologies by combining traditional and novel top down fabrication with state-of-the-art bottom up fabrication.
The outline of the project is presented below:
Emerging nanodevices based on functional oxides are currently regarded as a promising solution for establishing next-generation’s memory elements. Their impact is foreseen to be realized through their infinitesimal dimensions, their capacity to store multiple bits of information per element and the miniscule energy required to write distinct states that overall results in high spatial- and high storage-density well beyond the current state-of-the-art. At the same time, the functional properties of such elements present us with opportunities in exploiting them as novel computation elements. This has rendered considerable research on the physical switching mechanisms of distinct functional oxides that facilitate memristive phenomena.
Our long-term goal is to investigate the performance, reliability, and the manufacturability of ultra-thin functional oxide layers, their application in high-density low-power memory devices and integration with conventional industrial semiconductor technologies.
The ideal candidate should have an MEng/MSc (or equivalent, or near completion) with first class honours or distinction in Electronics, Materials Science, Physics, or a closely related subject with experience in micro/nano fabrication techniques and an interest in thin-films. Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is available to UK/EU applicants for a period of 3 years. The Nano Group will provide research experience in one of its programs, training, laboratory facilities and access to its seminar and lectures. Students would also be encouraged to attend three major conferences during their period of study and would have access to all university facilities for wider study, including the libraries, and recreation.

PhD Position -Theory
(Salary Scale 13 TV-L/75 %)
We are looking for motivated candidates with interest in novel areas of nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics, specifically the Nonlinear Rheology of dense liquids. We develop first-principles approaches for the dynamics of complex liquids flowing in microfluidic channels. The effect of confining walls on the internal dynamics is studied, both numerically and analytically. Molecular-dynamics computer simulations, performed in the group, will provide tests for the theoretical approaches. Open questions concern the transfer of previously developed theoretical methods from the bulk to channels, and the description of inhomogeneous strain responses under applied external forces/stresses. Besides performing theoretical development, the PhD candidate is expected to work together with experimental groups in the DFG research unit FOR 1394 “Nonlinear response to probe vitrification”.

The successful candidate will hold a Masters/Diploma degree in physics or a related science, and have first experience with numerical methods in physics and excellent knowledge in statistical physics. SUMMARYA Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available to work in the group of Professor Ronan McGrath. The role involves oversight of a range of investigations of the structural and electronic properties of complex inter-metallic systems, using scanning tunnelling microscopy and other surface science techniques.
THE POST
You should have a PhD in Physics or a related area. Expertise in tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy is essential, as is technical ability in helping maintain and develop the suite of microscopes. The post is available from 1 October 2013 until 30 September 2015. As research co-ordinator you are expected to lead several of the projects and will also take part in other experiments at UK and international facilities. You will also help with the day-to-day supervision of PhD and MSc students in the group. You may also be asked to represent the group in international collaboration meetings and workshops and management of relationships with collaborating groups. You should have an honours degree in Physics or Chemistry, a PhD in a related discipline and postdoctoral experience is also essential.
We would like to attract excellent, ambitious individuals with relevant skills and high levels of achievement. The ability to work within a team and to support other researchers is essential to this post.
You will play a full role in running the group, including taking part in strategic research discussions and allow the identification of new ideas and concepts, ensuring efficient and high-quality laboratory practice, meeting with students individually or in sub-groups to ensure work is proceeding in the most effective way. You will deploy your scientific expertise to troubleshoot research programmes that have reached critical points and to explore new research directions i.e. carrying out advanced experimental scientific research.
You will also take strategic responsibility for identifying new research opportunities and ensuring that these opportunities are attained – e.g., by carrying out initial experiments, setting up collaborations and helping to draft research proposals to generate initial funding. It is expected that you will be an innovative individual with an interest in applying your research skills to a challenging project – this will require daily decision making in terms of determining the best approaches to solve a particular research problem. There will be a responsibility to liaise with academic staff, postdoctoral research workers and research students.
You will have a flexible approach to change research fields and identify and implement required developments in measurement and synthesis capability. The appointment will be at Grade 7 or 8 depending on experience.
SURFACE SCIENCE RESEARCH CENTREThe Surface Science Research Centre (SSRC) was first established as a UK Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC) in 1989. It holds the distinction of being the only major IRC awarded to the North West region by the EPSRC. At the end of its 10 year ring-fenced funding period, the Centre had clearly established an international reputation as one of the leading surface science centres in Europe. In the post-IRC period, strong commitment by the University enabled the SSRC to continue as a coherent research unit and allowed its unique interdisciplinarity and critical mass to be preserved and enhanced in strategic directions. Today, the SSRC is one of the main research centres at the University of Liverpool and enjoys international acclaim in its own right. Its inherent inter- and multi-disciplinarity is an attribute currently being identified by the UK Research Councils and EU Framework programmes as a key need in European science.
The current research themes of the SSRC cut across the disciplines of chemistry, physics, biology and materials science, and combine the efforts of both experimentalists and theoreticians. The overarching ambition of this work is to achieve nanoscale control, design and assembly of function. One of the major strengths of the SSRC is its excellent equipment base, constituting over 25 sophisticated spectroscopic and imaging techniques that routinely allow surface events to be mapped at the nanoscale level.
THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICSFounded in 1881, when the first Professor of Physics was Sir Oliver Lodge, Liverpool has a long tradition of excellence in research in physics. The Department has retained the top grade of excellence in three consecutive reviews by HEFCE - the national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
This considerable achievement reflects the Department's international reputation in the fields of condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, particle physics and surface science.
The Department is very well funded and, for example, enjoys a high research income per academic staff member from the UK research councils.
