For project Nanogap luminescence as a new tool for studying molecular electronics and fluorescence enhancement (Department of Chemistry) Deadline: 21-11-2013 Project Description The ongoing miniaturizing of silicon based electronics has pushed his technology into the realm of the nanoscale. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the fundamental electron transport properties through single molecules or low number of molecules. Although high impact scientific research has already been performed on electron transport through single molecules in nanogaps, these methods are generally based on measuring the conductance through the individual molecules. The central scientific objective of this proposal is to develop a platform for studying electroluminescence, fluorescence and charge transport properties of single organic molecules residing in self-assembled nanoscale electrode gaps. Qualifications A MSc degree in a field relevant to the research project and good English skills are required. Experience with setting up and aligning home build spectroscopy equipment like spectrometers, lasers, monochromators, cameras etc. is required. Hands-on experience with TC-SPC is also required. Clean room experience e.g. UV-lithography and knowledge about electroconduction/ electroluminescence/LEDs is also recommended. Knowledge about Matlab is also beneficial. He/she will join a dedicated and international team and is expected to acquire know-how in the various techniques used in the group required for the project. Place of employment and work The employment is in the group of Prof. Tom Vosch, Department of Chemistry, University of Copenhagen. Term of Salary and Employment The position is for 3-years and is carried out in accordance with Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) on salaried scholarships. The minimum starting salary is DKK 304,055 plus a pension contribution of DKK 42,000. Supplements can be added according to qualifications. Successful candidates will be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School of Science, University of Copenhagen. It is expected that the Scholar follow recommendations and deadlines from the supervisor on writing reports and articles. The scholarship holder is obliged to carry out tasks related to lectures, exercises, laboratory exercises etc. as set by the Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The scholarship is awarded accordingly to the regulations in The Ministry of Science, Technology and Development, Executive order no. 284, April 25th 2008 regarding the appointment of academic staff at the University. Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher/PhD: Optics/Photonics

Two Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher/PhD positions for 36 months starting from 1st February 2014 are available within the Applied Optics Group, School of Physical Sciences. These are supported by an EU funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network European Industrial Doctorate, jointly organized with NKT Photonics Denmark. Students will spend half of their time in Kent and half at NKT in Denmark.
Research will focus on innovative solutions of generating and handling the supercontinuum (SC), connection between noise and usefulness of SC in applications such as optical coherence tomography and generation of tunable UV-light sources using the SC. Supervision will be provided in an European setting where specialised and complementary training will be provided at the two sites as well as during network events.
The funding stipulations insist that at the time of recruitment, applicants: should be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the UK or Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to appointment. The applicant must have a good background in theoretical and experimental optics and expected to have graduated in Physics (Optics) or Electrical and Electronic Engineering. We are looking for highly imaginative and self-motivated individuals with expertise in lasers, cameras, fibre optics, digital signal processing. Prior experience of LabView or C++ and skills in interfacing I/O boards are essential.
The applicant will be paid a salary in the region of €40,000 (paid in the local currency using an appropriate conversion rate), subject to Marie Curie regulations. A mobility allowance depending on personal situation is also paid.
The Applied Optics Group, where the student will be based, has recently moved into a new state-of-the-art facility and is incorporated into the Photonics Centre, as part of a University-wide initiative to co-locate all Optics research under one roof.
